"None Would Have Survived…"- Gautam Gambhir opens up on Virat Kohli's 71st ton

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opens up on the long wait of Virat Kohli to get his 71st ton in a talk.

Indian megastar Virat Kohli smashed an unbeaten 122 in just 61 deliveries in the match against Afghanistan in the last match of the Super 4 stage in the Asia Cup. Though the knock came after India got eliminated from the tournament, Kohli's knock was appreciated all over the world.

Former and current players showered congratulations on Virat's much-awaited 71st ton. Now Indian former opener Gautam Gambhir came up with his view. Gambhir is known for his straightforward statements. In this case, he also gave an honest view. Gambhir told no other player would survive on the team after this long drought of runs no matter how big the name is. But Virat was given chances after chances for his records.

Gambhir's statement:

“Three years is a very long time. It's not three months. And I'm not trying to be critical of him but he has earned that just because he has got loads of runs in the past. But I don't think so that any of the young batters would have survived in international cricket had they not got a hundred in three years,” Gambhir said.

He added, “Eventually it had to happen and it happened at the right time as well. You are just approaching the T20 World Cup and he's got a hundred so he has got the monkey off his back. But let's be fair and honest, I don't think anyone in the dressing room would have survived three years without a hundred. People like Ashwin, Rahane, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul have been dropped. I haven't known one guy who hasn't been dropped after not having scored a hundred in three years. It is only Virat Kohli and he has earned that.”

Eventually, Virat hit his 70th century in 2019 at Eden Gardens in the day-night test match. After that, the struggle began. Kohli will now be seen in the consecutive two home series against Australia and South Africa. The showstopper batsman will surely look up to continue his form and get more post before the all important T20 WC.
